Coronado
Ribbons of modulated stone extend from the façade of the residence toward the city sidewalk, departing from the typical front lawn of Coronado Island homes.
The residence is located on a narrow parcel on Coronado Island in San Diego, California, where stone ribbons accent the front yard, with and without planting, to create a textured front yard and entry into the home. Inside, glass sliders open the living space into the central courtyard where a guest house and an acrylic pool define the boundaries. A monolithic basalt bench intersects the courtyard creating two distinct spaces, one for entertaining and the other for play space for the kids, shaded by melaleuca trees. A bamboo grove at the rear of the property provides screening for the roof deck above while the yellow-green stalks create a sculptural effect against the ebony-stained fence below.
